How to load a sound in the Reason Re-Drum Sample Drum machine

In this tutorial I will show you how to load a sound on the Re-Drum Computer or Drum Machine for short. Loading sounds individually is useful when you want to create a beat with unique sounds that do not come in a prepackaged kit or refill. The drum machine will only accept Wave or Reason Refill format. Once you have enough sounds loaded you can create a loop or beat (please see how to create a loop tutorial)
Launch Reason by double clicking on the Orange Icon

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When you launch Reason, it should show you the default rack (full of instruments)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Click on the sideways pyramid icon to expand the Re-Drum Computer Drum Machine.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once the Re-Drum has been expanded it should look like this.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We will begin by selecting the first channel on the drum machine. This can be done by pressing the “select button:. Then you can proceed to click on the folder icon.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You should now see the sample browser window open. Here you can browse for the desired Wave file or Reason refill to load. For this sample I will choose a bass drum then click OK.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Channel 1 should now display the sample you just loaded.

How to Setup Your Sound Preferences in Reason, Choose a sound driver in Reason

In this tutorial I will show you how to select the appropriate sound driver in the Reason preferences.  A sound driver is software that tells the program (Reason) what hardware or sound card is available for audio playback (basically allows the sound to be heard when you press play).  If no sound driver is selected you will not hear any sound coming from the program when you press play even though you see sound in the mixer.

Launch Reason by double clicking on the Orange Icon

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Go to the file menu at the top left hand corner of your screen and click on “Edit” then click on “Preferences”

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You should now see the Preferences Menu listed below.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Click on the “Page” drop down menu

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If there is no sound driver selected you should see the menu below

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Click on the “Audio Card Driver drop down menu and select the desired sound driver or interface

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once you select the correct driver you should see a green question mark next to it

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Exit the Menu by clicking on the red X

How to create a new device in Reason rack (Redrum, Synth, Effects, etc)

In this tutorial I will show you how to create a device in Reason. Creating your own device is useful when you want to creating something using other than what you are given with the default rack (the rack that comes up when you start reason. You can create as many devices as you wish (as long as you have enough memory and processing power on your computer. There are two popular ways to accomplish this; I will be showing you both.

Method one – In this scenario we will be using the Reason’s File Menu.

Launch Reason by double clicking on the Orange Icon

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When you launch Reason, it should show you the default rack (full of instruments)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Go to the file menu at the top left hand corner of your screen and click on File

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now click on “New”

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You should now have a completely empty rack with only a mixer.
The other Reason session can now be closed (the one you first opened).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Go to the file menu at top of your screen and click on “Create”.
Then select the device you would like added to the rack.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For this example I will use the ReDrum computer
(also known as the drum machine).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You should now have a new ReDrum computer added to your rack. The beauty
of Reason is as long as you have enough available channels on your virtual mixer
it will automatically wire the device for you.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Method 2 – Using the right click menu

In this method we will do almost the exact same thing as the first method above except
that we won’t be using the file menu at the top of the screen,. Instead you will right
click anywhere in the open black area on the rack or on a device itself.

If you right click in any open area in the rack you should immediately
get the same “Create device” menu as described above

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can also achieve the result by right clicking directly on another
device on the rack (for this example I will do it on the mixer). Then select create.
